This course is designed to equip drivers with essential theoretical knowledge on safe loading and unloading practices, effective load securing methods, and the practical skills needed to maintain safety and compliance in the workplace.
We have been accredited by the IRU in Geneva Switzerland as an Approved Training Institute & now offer training in Safe Loading And Cargo Securing, delivering IRU training programmes which are recognised both nationally and internationally.
The IRU are the global leader in road transport policy and European legislation for all aspects of road transport and have developed training programmes with their international partners including HSA Ireland. These programmes are recognised as international best practice.
Safe Loading and Cargo Securing in Ireland is governed by road traffic acts such as the 1961 Road Traffic Act and the 2005 Safety, Health and Welfare act. Currently both An Garda Siochana Road policing units and the HSA have trained their officers in the discipline of safe loading.
Motor-ed can deliver Safe Loading training either at the customers base or at our premises on the Coes Road Industrial Estate in Dundalk, A91 W657. Responsibility for safe loading is not just for the driver but for all involved in the transport delivery chain e.g. loaders, packers, supervisors and managers. All our instructors come from commercial driving backgrounds delivering real world experience to the training. Training can be tailored to meet the specific needs of the client and organised to minimise disruption to work schedules, (e.g. Saturday training).
The training syllabus involves classroom-based theory and practical exercises performed on a loading platform. Upon completion participants will be equipped with the skills and knowledge of safe loading and unloading practices, effective load securing methods, and the practical skills needed to maintain safety and compliance in the workplace, with participants receiving a recognised certificate in Safe Loading And Cargo Securing.
At the end of the Safe Loading & Cargo Securing training attendees will:
- Know the legislation regarding safe loading cargo securing.
- Understand forces acting on a vehicle and the load.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of the calculations of lashing forces.
- Identify and understand appropriate securing techniques to use.
- Use securing equipment correctly.
- Identify different vehicles & select the appropriate equipment to use.
- Work safely on site & help reduce business costs occurred due to transportation damage.




The Standard for Load restraining on road vehicles is European Standard EN 12195 and comprises of the following parts:
European Standard EN 12195-1: Calculation of securing forces.
European Standard EN 12195-2: Web lashing made from man-made fibers.
European Standard EN 12195-3: Lashing chains.
European Standard EN 12195-4: Lashing steel wire ropes.
European Standard EN 12642: Load containment standard for the complete body structure of commercial vehicles and trailers.
European Standard EN 12640: Lashing Points on Commercial Vehicles for Goods Transportation.
This is a practical hands on course.
